Best Things To See and Do In Rome, Italy

Rome, the Eternal City, is a historic marvel where every corner reveals ancient ruins, grand piazzas, and rich cultural heritage. On our Jet2 holiday to Rome, we explored its mix of paid and free attractions, from iconic landmarks like the Pantheon—where we paid an entrance fee—to the breathtaking Trevi Fountain, which we visited multiple times, finding it less crowded early in the morning or late at night. With countless sites to discover, from the Colosseum to hidden alleyways filled with history, Rome truly offers something for everyone.

Based on our experience exploring Rome, I’ve compiled a list of the best things to do in the city, including must-visit attractions, hidden gems, and a mix of both paid and free sights to help you make the most of your trip.

Colosseum

The Colosseum is one of the most famous landmarks in Rome and a must-visit for anyone exploring the city. This ancient amphitheater once hosted gladiator battles and grand events, making it a fascinating place to step back in time. Its massive structure and rich history attract millions of visitors every year, and it remains one of the most iconic symbols of Rome.  

Based on our experience, I highly recommend pre-booking your entry tickets. The Colosseum is one of the busiest attractions in the city and the queues can be very long. Booking in advance saves time and ensures you get inside without hassle, allowing you to enjoy this incredible historic site without the stress of waiting in line.

Arch of Constantine

The Arch of Constantine is a famous monument in Rome, standing right next to the Colosseum. It was built to celebrate Emperor Constantine’s victory in battle and is one of the best-preserved triumphal arches in the city. With its detailed carvings and grand design, it is a stunning piece of Roman history that attracts many visitors.  

Since it is located in a public area, you can see the Arch of Constantine for free while exploring the Colosseum. It’s a great spot to take photos and admire the impressive artwork up close. If you’re visiting the Colosseum, be sure to stop by and appreciate this beautiful piece of Rome’s past.

Roman Forum + Palentine Hill

The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are some of the most important historical sites in Rome. The Forum was once the center of Roman life, filled with temples, government buildings, and markets, while Palatine Hill is known as the birthplace of Rome, offering amazing views over the city. Walking through these ancient ruins feels like stepping back in time, making it a must-visit for history lovers.  

Based on our experience, I recommend pre-booking your entry tickets, as this is a very popular site. We visited the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill as part of a guided Colosseum tour, which gave us great insights into their history. However, you can also buy tickets separately if you prefer to explore at your own pace. Either way, it's a fascinating place to visit!

The Pantheon

The Pantheon is another famous and well-preserved ancient buildings in Rome. It is known for its massive dome and impressive architecture, as well as being the resting place of Italian kings and famous figures. The interior is breathtaking, with a large open oculus at the top of the dome that lets in natural light.  

We visited the Pantheon on the first Sunday of the month, so admission was free. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait long in the queue, and it wasn’t too crowded. However, I have heard from others that it can get very busy, so it’s best to pre-book tickets if you're visiting on a regular day to avoid long waits.

The Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps are one of the most famous landmarks in Rome. This beautiful staircase connects Piazza di Spagna at the bottom to the Trinità dei Monti church at the top. It is a great place to sit, relax and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the city.  

The steps are also a very popular spot for photography and selfies. Many visitors come here to take pictures with the stunning backdrop of the church and the square. Whether you visit during the day or in the evening when the lights are on, the Spanish Steps are always a great place to capture memories of Rome.

Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is one of the most famous and beautiful fountains in Rome. It is known for its grand design, featuring statues of Oceanus and other sea figures. Many visitors come here to throw a coin into the water, as legend says it will bring good luck and ensure a return to Rome.  

We visited the Trevi Fountain several times during our holiday, and every time it was packed with tourists. The only times it was less crowded were very early in the morning or very late at night. Still, it is a must-visit spot in Rome, and the sight of the fountain, especially when it is lit up in the evening, is truly unforgettable.

Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona is one of the most beautiful and lively squares in Rome. It is famous for its stunning fountains, including the impressive Fountain of the Four Rivers in the center. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, cafes, and restaurants, making it a great place to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.  

Many visitors come here to admire the architecture, watch street performers, and take in the vibrant energy of the square.

Borghese Gallery

The Borghese Gallery is one of the most famous art museums in Rome. It is known for its beautiful collection of paintings, sculptures and artworks by artists like Caravaggio, Bernini and Raphael. The museum is inside the stunning Borghese Villa, surrounded by lovely gardens.

Catacombs and Crypts Tour

We went on a guided tour that took us to the Catacombs of Saint Domitilla and the Capuchin Crypts. The tour was very informative and we learned a lot about the history and significance of these sites. Castel St Angelo

Castel Sant’Angelo is a famous historic fortress in Rome. It was first built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian but later became a castle, a prison, and even a papal residence. Today, it is a museum where visitors can explore its rooms, tunnels, and beautiful terraces.  

One of the best reasons to visit Castel Sant’Angelo is the amazing view from the top. From the terrace, you can see the Tiber River, St. Peter’s Basilica, and much of Rome. It is a great place to learn about history while also enjoying some of the best views in the city.

The Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums are one of the most popular attractions in Rome. They have a huge collection of art, sculptures and historical treasures collected by the popes over centuries. One of the main highlights is the Sistine Chapel, where visitors can see Michelangelo’s famous ceiling painting.  

We set aside half a day to explore the museums, but you could spend days here and still not see everything. There is so much to discover, from the stunning Raphael Rooms to the Gallery of Maps. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in art and history.

Booking tickets in advance is highly recommended.

The Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is one of the most famous places in the Vatican. It is best known for its incredible ceiling, painted by Michelangelo, which shows scenes from the Bible, including the famous "Creation of Adam." The chapel is still used for important religious events, like the election of a new pope.  

Visitors should not miss looking up at the breathtaking ceiling and also admiring "The Last Judgment," another masterpiece by Michelangelo on the altar wall. The artwork is full of detail and meaning, making it a must-see for anyone visiting Rome.

St Peter's Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the most famous churches in the world. It is a stunning building with beautiful artwork, grand columns and a massive dome designed by Michelangelo. Many visitors come here to admire its beauty and to see the tomb of St. Peter, one of Jesus’ apostles.  

Inside, visitors should not miss Michelangelo’s famous sculpture, "Pieta," and the breathtaking view from the top of the dome. Climbing to the dome gives a stunning view of St. Peter’s Square and the city of Rome. It is a must-visit place for anyone exploring the Vatican.

Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola

Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola is a beautiful church in the center of Rome, near the Pantheon. It is famous for its stunning Baroque design and incredible ceiling frescoes painted by Andrea Pozzo. The church is dedicated to Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits.  

Visitors should not miss the amazing ceiling painting, which creates the illusion of a high, domed space even though the church has a flat roof. 

Another highlight is the painted fake dome, which looks real from a certain angle. 

This church is a hidden gem and a great place to admire stunning art in a peaceful setting.

Food Tour

A food tour in Rome is a great way to taste the city’s delicious flavours and learn about its rich food culture. Rome is famous for its traditional dishes, and a guided tour takes you to some of the best local spots to try authentic Italian food. It is a fun and tasty experience for anyone who loves good food.  

On a food tour, visitors can enjoy classic Roman dishes like pasta carbonara, cacio e pepe and supplì (fried rice balls with cheese). There are also delicious pizzas, fresh cheeses, and cured meats to try. For dessert, you might get to taste creamy gelato or the famous tiramisu.  

Many tours also include drinks like Italian wine or a refreshing aperitivo. It is a great way to discover hidden food spots, learn from local guides, and enjoy an evening of great flavours. A food tour is a must-do experience for food lovers visiting Rome!

Victor Emmanuel II National Monument

The Victor Emmanuel II National Monument is a grand white marble building in the heart of Rome, near Piazza Venezia. It was built to honor Italy’s first king, Victor Emmanuel II, and is one of the most striking landmarks in the city. Many visitors come here to admire its impressive architecture and learn about Italy’s history.  

Some parts of the monument are free to visit, including the grand staircases, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the terrace with great city views. However, there is a paid elevator that takes visitors to the very top, offering stunning panoramic views of Rome.  

One thing not to miss is the breathtaking view from the upper terraces, where you can see famous landmarks like the Colosseum and Roman Forum. 

The monument is also home to a museum about Italian unification, making it a great place to learn while enjoying the views.

Museo Nazionale Romano, Palazzo Altemps

The Museo Nazionale Romano, Palazzo Altemps, is a beautiful museum in the center of Rome, near Piazza Navona. It is known for its impressive collection of ancient Roman and Greek sculptures, displayed inside a stunning Renaissance palace. The museum is a great place to explore history in a quiet and elegant setting.  

Visitors should not miss the famous Ludovisi Collection, which includes masterpieces like the "Ludovisi Gaul" and the "Ludovisi Throne." The palace itself is also worth admiring, with its beautiful frescoed ceilings and grand courtyards. The museum offers free entry on certain days, making it even more accessible for those who love history and art. It is a perfect spot for exploring ancient sculptures in a peaceful atmosphere.

The Column of Marcus Aurelius

The Column of Marcus Aurelius is a famous ancient monument in Rome, located in Piazza Colonna. It was built to honour Emperor Marcus Aurelius and tells the story of his military campaigns through detailed carvings that spiral up the column. It is similar to Trajan’s Column and is an important piece of Roman history.  

Visitors should not miss the incredible carvings that show scenes of battles and soldiers in action. Although you cannot climb the column, it is still impressive to see up close. The square around it is also a nice place to relax and admire this well-preserved monument in the heart of Rome.

As the Italian saying goes, 'Roma, non basta una vita' - a lifetime isn't enough to see all of Rome. There is so much to see and do in Rome that you will want to keep returning to the city to see and explore more.
