Why Should You Visit São Brás de Alportel in the Algarve?

During our trip to the Algarve, we stayed in Albufeira and used it as a base to explore some of the lesser-known towns in the region. One day, after breakfast, we set off on a short drive to São Brás de Alportel, which took less than 45 minutes. This gave us plenty of time to spend the entire day exploring the town at a relaxed pace. We also enjoyed visiting other charming towns like Alte and Silves during our stay.

São Brás de Alportel has a rich history rooted in Portugal’s cultural and industrial heritage. It has been occupied from the pre-historic times to the Roman period and was once the summer retreat for bishops of the Algarve (from the 17th century until the country became a republic in 1910).

The town flourished during the 19th century as a center for cork production. It became one of the most important cork-producing regions in the world, with its products exported internationally. Because of its location, it was like a meeting point for roads linking Faro to Almodovar and Loule to Tavira. As the town developed economically, its population increased and it soon became the national cork capital.

As the years passed, the town's industrial prominence has waned as factories moved to the north og Portugal. However, the town (even today) retains strong ties to its cork heritage, visible in the surrounding cork oak forests and the Cork Route, which highlights the traditional harvesting process.

Today, São Brás de Alportel is a peaceful, authentic destination that offers a glimpse into the Algarve’s rural charm. When you visit this lovely town, you can explore its historical landmarks, like the Igreja Matriz de São Brás and the São Brás de Alportel Museum, which delve into the region's past. The town is also known for its vibrant cultural traditions, from colourful Easter processions to street art to local crafts markets. With scenic walking trails, quiet streets and delicious regional cuisine, São Brás de Alportel is perfect for those seeking a slower, more meaningful travel experience.
