Christmas in Birmingham: The Best Things to See and Do
Birmingham feels so magical during the festive season! The city comes alive with sparkling lights and beautifully decorated streets. Everywhere you go, there's a festive buzz, from the cosy wooden chalets at the Christmas markets to the twinkling ice rinks. It's the perfect time to soak up the holiday cheer as the atmosphere is always warm and welcoming, no matter how chilly the weather gets.
I love exploring Birmingham whenever I get the chance, but there's something extra special about visiting during this time of year. There’s so much to see and do and it’s wonderful to watch the city transform into a winter wonderland.
Whether you're with family, friends or just exploring solo, Birmingham during the festive season is an experience not to miss. Here are some of the things you can do in Birmingham during the festive season.
The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market
One of the main draws in Birmingham during the festive season is the Frankfurt Christmas Market.
Did you know that it’s the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany and Austria? The market is filled with rows of charming wooden chalets that serve delicious food like bratwurst and pretzels, warm drinks like mulled wine and hot chocolate and offer a variety of unique souvenirs and gifts to browse and shop from.
The joyful exclamations of kids riding the carousel add such a happy vibe to the atmosphere, making it feel even more magical.
Whether you’re there to enjoy the festive treats or just soak in the lively energy, the market is a must-visit during Christmas time in Birmingham.
Brum’s Christmas Reindeer Trail
One of my favourite festive activities this year, in Birmingham, is the Reindeer Trail. It is a fun and creative way to explore the city. The trail features nine beautifully decorated reindeer sculptures, each named after Santa's famous reindeer like Dasher, Dancer and Rudolph. As you stroll through the city, you’ll spot these charming sculptures in different locations, making it a delightful adventure for all ages. It’s a perfect blend of art, festive cheer and exploration, and it’s free to enjoy, making it a must-do during the holiday season!

Ice Skate Birmingham
Ice Skate Birmingham is such a fun way to enjoy the festive season! The ice rink is covered, so you can glide across the ice no matter what the weather is like, which is great if you’re looking for a magical winter experience without worrying about rain or snow. Whether you're a pro skater or just wobbling your way around, it’s all about having fun and making memories. The twinkling lights and cheerful music make it feel like you’re in a winter wonderland.
After skating, head to the Ice Lounge and Bar to warm up. It’s the perfect spot to cosy up with loved ones, sip on festive drinks and soak in the magical atmosphere. It’s such a lovely way to end your skating session and really get into the Christmas spirit.
Ice Skate Birmingham is open from 1st November 2024 to 5th January 2025, running daily from 10am to 10pm.
The Big Wheel
The iconic Big Wheel is right next to the ice rink and Christmas markets, so it’s easy to spot. In the evening with all the glittering Christmas lights, it offers lovely views of Birmingham.
If you ride up on the Big Wheel you will see some of Birmingham’s best sights, like the Library of Birmingham, Council House, Town Hall, Cube, Brindleyplace and parts of the German Christmas Market.
You can’t book the Big Wheel or City Flyer online, so just show up and pay on the spot!
Christmas In Cathedral Square
The festive market in the grounds of Birmingham Cathedral is another magical spot in the city. You’ll find local producers selling crafts, gifts, food and drinks. There’s also a fun helter-skelter to ride and the cosy Pigeon in the Park Pub for a festive drink.
Throughout the event, Christmas in Cathedral Square will feature music from local artists and a variety of traditional crafts, ornaments and gifts from independent businesses across the West Midlands. The market is open from 13th November 2024 to 22nd December 2024.
Festive Shopping in Birmingham
Festive shopping in Birmingham is such a treat! The Christmas markets are perfect for picking up unique gifts and handmade crafts while enjoying the cheerful festive vibe. Wandering through the wooden chalets, you’ll find everything from beautiful ornaments and jewellery to delicious edibles and drinks — great for gifting or just treating yourself.
For those who love big-name brands and high-street favourites, Birmingham’s shopping scene doesn’t disappoint. The iconic Bullring & Grand Central is home to stores like Selfridges, Zara, Michael Kors, L’Occitane, Ted Baker, H&M and LEGO, while the Mailbox offers a touch of luxury with designer shops and lifestyle brands.
Don’t forget to visit the stunning arcades, like Great Western Arcade, filled with independent boutiques and quirky finds. Whether you're hunting for the perfect present for a loved one or just enjoying the festive buzz, Birmingham is a shopper's paradise during Christmas.
Festive Food & Drink Experiences in Birmingham
Birmingham’s festive dining scene offers a delightful range of options to satisfy holiday cravings, whether you’re after a traditional roast or something more unique. The Malmaison Bar & Grill features a seasonal Celebrations Menu with festive three-course meals, perfect for intimate gatherings or lively parties. .
For a more eclectic experience, Dishoom serves festive menus inspired by Bombay cafés, while The Ivy Temple Row delights with indulgent seasonal specials in its elegant, vibrant setting. Bonus - Take a Selfie with Paddington
Finally, a bonus experience. To celebrate the recent release of PADDINGTON IN PERU, a trail of Paddington Bear statues are being displayed at 23 locations all over the UK and Ireland. Birmingham is one of the locations. A beautifully crafted and painted statue sporting the bear’s signature red hat, blue duffle coat and a marmalade sandwich in paw is currently (at the time of publishing this article) at Selfridges, Birmingham.
