There’s something incredibly inviting about the mountains. Whether it’s the crisp, cool air, the sense of peace that comes from being surrounded by towering peaks or the sheer thrill of adventure, travelling to the mountains always feels like an escape into nature’s grandeur.

Today, I will take you on a journey to the French Alps - to a charming alpine village called Châtel.

Châtel is located in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps, near the Swiss border. It’s part of the Portes du Soleil ski area, one of the largest ski domains in the world, which connects resorts across both France and Switzerland. Châtel has maintained much of its traditional alpine character, with wooden chalets, mountain pastures and a laid-back, authentic atmosphere, making it a favourite for families and those seeking a more relaxed mountain experience.

If you are planning a trip to the French Alps, then Châtel should be on your list because it is an ideal destination for those looking for a balance of adventure, tradition and relaxation. Need convincing, then read on.

As part of the Portes du Soleil area, Châtel offers access to over 600 kilometers of ski slopes, with terrain for all levels, from beginners to advanced skiers. The village itself has several ski lifts, connecting to other popular resorts like Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets. Châtel is known for its excellent snow conditions and a wide variety of runs, including some great off-piste options.

Châtel is especially popular with families due to its friendly, low-key vibe. The resort has a variety of beginner slopes, ski schools, and kids’ activities, making it a great place for young skiers and snowboarders. The Milka Purple Slope is a fun, educational ski run designed for children.

Peronally, I think one of Châtel’s most appealing features is its traditional Savoyard architecture and atmosphere. Unlike some larger, purpose-built ski resorts, Châtel retains the feel of a working alpine village, with local farms producing cheese, like Abondance and Reblochon, which can be tasted at local markets or restaurants. The village is known for its warm hospitality and cozy mountain restaurants serving hearty alpine cuisine, such as fondue, raclette, and tartiflette.

Châtel's proximity to the Swiss border makes it an ideal spot for exploring the wider Portes du Soleil area. From Châtel, you can easily ski or hike into Switzerland, enjoying the unique experience of crossing international borders in the middle of an outdoor adventure.

While Châtel is quieter than some of the more famous ski resorts, it still offers a lively après-ski scene with a range of bars and restaurants. For relaxation, the Forme d'O Aquatic Centre provides a variety of wellness facilities, including indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and a hammam, offering a perfect place to unwind after a day on the slopes.

There is a wide range of holiday rentals in Chatel, France, from cosy chalets to modern hotels, from apartment-style residences to boutique venues, each one catering to various preferences and budgets. Whether you're looking for a traditional alpine experience or something more luxurious, the village has plenty of options. 

Also, it is a wonderful destination year round, I think. If you visit in Spring, the mountains are decked with vibrant colours and the hiking trails are accessible. It is not crowded either. In summers, its ideal for hiking, mountain biking and water sports. Autumn, my favourite time, is pleasant and the landscape is at its colourful best. Winter, ofcourse, is the key season for winter sports enthusiasts.

Basing yourself in Châtel while visiting the French Alps is an excellent choice for those seeking a balance between adventure and authenticity. With its direct access to the vast Portes du Soleil ski area, Châtel offers world-class skiing and snowboarding in the winter, while transforming into a hub for hiking, biking, and outdoor activities in the summer. Its traditional alpine charm, combined with a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, makes it a perfect destination for travellers of all ages.
