Casa Suzy & Roxy Homestay in Arpasu de Jos, Romania

One of the highlights of our Romania holiday was driving through the scenic mountainous route of Transfagarasan. We headed out from Brasov to Curtea de Argeș (home to the Curtea de Argeș monastery) which was the starting point of our Transfăgărășan drive.

Driving through the Transfăgărășan was an amazing experience. The scenery was absolutely stunning, with mountains all around us and the road winding through them. We saw so many brown bears along the way, which was both exciting and one of the reasons we chose this route. The hairpin bends were thrilling to drive through with every turn giving us a new, beautiful view and we just couldn’t get enough of it. It was an amazing time, and I’d happily do it all over again in a heartbeat.

After the Transfăgărășan drive, we wanted a place to stay close to the end point of our journey which was a little ahead of Cârțișoara. After a lot of deliberation and based on our itinerary for the last leg of our Romania trip, we chose a homestay in the village of Arpaşu de Jos called Casa Suzy & Roxy.

Romanian Homestay

The Casa Suzy & Roxy homestay turned out to be a great choice. It was a relaxed and comfortable setting with home-like comfort. The family stayed on the ground floor while the rooms on the upper floors were set up for guests. There was a choice of double, King, Queen and triple rooms. We picked a double room and it had a comfortable bed, a wardrobe, a flat-screen TV, a mini fridge, a private bathroom, bed linen and towels.

The room was was clean and comfortable. It was compact but it didn’t bother us since we were out exploring most of the day. It was just what we needed — a cosy place to rest after our adventures.

Roxy, who was our hostess, was fantastic. All the other members of her family whom we interacted with were equally friendly and welcoming. Staying with a local family gives you a deeper insight into the customs, traditions and daily life of the locals, I feel. Roxy provided tips on local attractions, other authentic Romanian experiences and even helped us book some of our local activities.

We had breakfast and dinner at the homestay, on all days during our stay. À la carte and continental breakfast options with warm dishes and local specialities were available. Roxy and her family had lived in Italy earlier and we could see the Italian influence in the menu. We tried their vegetarian pizzas and they were delicious - perfect with the Romanian beers!

Overall, we loved our stay in this homestay. It is kind of midway between Sibiu and Brasov and if you are travelling from one to the other, you can pick this as a mid-stop. It is also a great choice for staying either before or after you drive the Transfăgărășan.

Attractions nearby include the Carta Cistercian Abbey (around 10 mins drive from the homestay), La Vâltori - traditional cottage industry (around 30 mins drive) and Făgăraș Fortress (29 kms).
