Christmas At Caxton | Caxton Grill Restaurant's Christmas Menu Review
What better way to spend a day in London than exploring its festive Christmas markets followed by a delicious dinner at an award-winning signature restaurant in a 4-star hotel? And that is what we did a few days back when we explored London Bridge City's 'Christmas by the River', followed the Snowman Sculpture Trail, did a spot of shopping and then made our way to Westminster to try out Caxton Grill's Christmas Menu.
Caxton Grill at the St Ermin's Hotel offers a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy great food and drinks. We've visited St Ermin's earlier to try out their Garden Afternoon Tea and had enjoyed the experience - great selection of sandwiches & sweet treats and polite & friendly staff. Although it has four-star credentials, the atmosphere wasn't pretentious at all. We were hoping for a similar experience at the Caxton Grill and it lived up to our expectations.
Caxton Grill is a modern space with a warm and friendly atmosphere. They serve mainly British and European fare with a focus on fresh, local ingredients some from St Ermin's very own rooftop kitchen garden! Their Christmas Menus launched a few days back and will be available throughout December. On offer are 2 and 3 course set menus from £35pp, a 4-course Christmas day menu with a glass of Champagne for £85pp, and a New Year’s Eve tasting menu at £95pp.
Let me begin by saying that the three-course festive menu was fab!
After we were seated, the serving staff explained the menu choices to us. They even gave their recommendations on the wine choices to pair with the different courses and as we perused the menu, the breadbasket arrived. With a crispy crust and a soft, airy inside the bread was served with flavourful mushroom butter and set the ball rolling for the evening's gastronomic experience.
We started with the Portobello mushroom, Jerusalem artichoke & truffle. It was beautifully presented and had lovely earthy flavours that worked well together. The portion size was small but that was fine as it allowed us to enjoy the mains and the dessert without a feeling of fullness.
For the mains, we were served Roasted beetroot, roast onion, potato puree, kale & pecorino - a simple but beautifully made dish that offered a great depth of flavour and texture. Each morsel of food had an explosion of taste and it was wonderful how simple vegetables had been given an unusual and delicious makeover.
Thoroughly enjoying our meal so far, we went on to order the desserts - Poached pear, chocolate and spiced red wine sorbet for Bhavin and the Bergamot parfait, Douglas fir ice cream with poached kumquats and crisp meringue for me. The poached pear was juicy and coupled with the spiced red wine sorbet it was a really festive indulgence, according to Bhavin. The Bergamot parfait served with Douglas fir ice cream and poached kumquats was an intriguing and refreshing sweet treat. It is fun when chefs push the envelope further in terms of flavour, texture, form and come up with irresistible combinations like these. I loved my dessert. It was a great way to end a lovely meal.
Overall, we loved the Christmas Menu at Caxton Grill. The food was fabulous & flavoursome, the ambience was relaxed & unostentatious and the waiting staff friendly, attentive & unobtrusive.
The 3 course Christmas Menu is priced at £45pp and you can add a glass of Prosecco for £9 or a 500ml carafe of House Wine for £15. It is available until 30 December 2019.
