Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões in Nordeste, Azores
Located in Nordeste (the northeastern part of São Miguel Island in the Azores) is the beautiful Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park. The natural park which is also a protected area is one of the most popular and most visited places in the Nordeste region. The park includes a large expanse of varying vegetation, a number of waterfalls and watermills (some are still functional while some now house the craft shop and the tourist office), fountains, walking trails and BBQ places. And the best part, both entry to the park and parking are free. There are also two properties - Moleiro House and Granel House - within the park which are let out as tourist accommodation.
The whole park is enjoyable but we particularly loved the hike through the woods (along the stream). It was stunningly beautiful with vegetation in all shades of green, large Cedar trees and ferns of all kind. The path followed the stream and at every turn, it offered lovely views. The diversity of vegetation was amazing. It felt like we were in a Rainforest! You could easily spend the whole day at Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões and not get bored.
