A Tour by Excursion Boat MS Schmittenhöhe on Lake Zell, Austria
Popular as a tourist destination, Zell am See is located in the Zell am See-Kaprun region of Austria. With less than 10,000 inhabitants, the city is one of the most important alpine tourist towns in Austria and boasts of glacier, mountains and a lake (known for its drinkable water). We visited Zell am See recently and are sharing what we think are the top three things to do in the Zell am See-Kaprun region.
Firstly we would suggest a visit to the lakeside town of Zell walking through its medieval town centre and then heading to enjoy a boat ride on the picturesque Lake Zell. We opted for a boat excursion on the MS Schmittenhöhe which is the biggest and most comfortable of the boats at the lake.
And let me tell you, it was not just another boat ride. This was an indulgent 45-minute boat trip between a glacier and the highest mountains of Austria. The excursion offered the best views of the historic Zell town, the stunning alpine landscape, and the snow-capped peaks. Seated in the comfortable sundeck of the MS Schmittenhöhe we enjoyed beautiful views of the Steinerne Meer, the Hohe Tauern mountains, the Zell local mountain, the Schmittenhöhe as well as lovely views of the town of Zell am See itself.
Overall, it was a delightful tour with the weather favouring us - the sun shone nicely and the calm, turquoise water of the lake had a relaxing effect. The alpine landscape dotted with trees in fantastic autumn colours brightened up the mood. It was a real treat!

Next up is the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Kitzsteinhorn mountain is located within the Kaprun region and the Kitzsteinhorn glaciers are a popular ski area with plenty of piste options catering for all grades of skiers. In addition to skiing, the Kitzsteinhorn has nearly 100 climbing routes and 12 kilometers of freeride mountain biking trails. And for those who come to experience the majestic Alpine scenery, Kitzsteinhorn lives up to the expectations, offering breathtaking views of the Alps. Whether you love nature and snow-capped mountains or are a skier (beginner or experienced), the Kitzsteinhorn area should not be missed when you are visiting Austria. You can read more about our visit here.
And finally, we would recommend a visit to the Schmittenhohe. We visited this place while in Austria and it was fabulous. Schmittenhohe has a number of different walks suitable for all levels. You can take the gondola to the top and then pick one of the walking routes. On a clear sunny day (we had excellent weather during our visit) the views from the top are amazing. We especially loved the view of the Zell town with the lake. Watch out for our detailed post on the Schmittenhohe.
