Waddesdon Manor in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire | National Trust
Located in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, Waddesdon Manor is about an hour and a half drive away from London making it an excellent day trip venue. The 16th-century French-style château was built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild during the late 1870s. Filled with several works of art (portraits etc.), exceptional furniture and Sevres porcelain collection, the Manor was passed on (over the decades) from Baron Ferdinand to several members of the Rothschild family and finally bequeathed to the National Trust in the late 1950s.
The gardens and parts of the house are open to visitors. Exhibitions and film screenings (on a big screen set against the backdrop of Waddesdon Manor) are held on a regular basis at the Manor.
You can explore the house at your own pace or opt for a guided tour. We decided to do it on our own and it took us around one and a half hours to take in everything inside the house. Friendly and knowledgeable House Hosts are on hand in all the rooms to answer any questions that visitors may have.
Post the house visit we spent a lot of time in the beautifully landscaped gardens. The gardens were a riot of colours with beautiful blooms and lovely sculptures. There is an Aviary garden, a Rose garden and a Parterre garden for visitors to explore. You can also bring your own picnic and enjoy it in the gardens. For the younger kids, there is an adventure playground.
There are several eating places at Waddesdon Manor - the Manor restaurant (serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea), Stables Café, Stables Courtyard (with lots of food and drink kiosks) and the Treaterie serving artisan ice creams, cakes, fudges and other sweets. Treaterie's ice cream is a must if you are visiting Waddesdon Manor - the Cookies and Cream flavour was delicious!
There is lots to see and do at Waddesdon Manor making it an ideal day out venue. It is a great place for the entire family. To find out more about the Manor, the opening times and ticket prices, visit www.waddesdon.org.uk
Here are some other National Trust properties that you may enjoy visiting: Packwood House, Stourhead, Charlecote Park, Overbeck's.
