Jersey War Tunnels - A poignant reminder of life in Jersey during the WW2 occupation
Jersey War Tunnels, in St. Lawrence, are one of Jersey’s most popular tourist attractions. This large network of tunnels dug out during WW2 (using mostly slave labour) was intended for use as barracks and ammunition store by the occupying forces. Today the tunnels serve as a museum, with a wide range of exhibits and displays, that tell the story of the German occupation. We spent around two hours in the tunnels and it was a very informative and interesting insight into the time when the island was under occupation during the war.
At the ticket counter you are given an identity card of a person who lived during the WW2 occupation of Jersey. You can track down that person as you move through the various rooms in the labyrinth of tunnels or find more information about them in the café. You are also given a postcard that is addressed to the Commandant. You need to read six letters that are displayed in the 'Whispers and Lies' room and then make a decision on whether you would post or discard the letter if you were in that scenario. This particular room makes you think and question people's decision making qualities and morality during war times. And it just proves that war is never ever good.
The exhibits and displays in the tunnels brought out the WW2 history to life. The whole experience was very thought provoking as one gets involved and entwined in the wartime lives of the locals of Jersey. If you are visiting Jersey, then do add this to your list of 'must-visit' places on the island. It is informative and tells the story of the occupation very well.
