Hotel Felix, Cambridge
Located just 1 mile out of Cambridge, Hotel Felix is perfectly placed to enjoy the university city's many attractions – including the various colleges, parks & gardens and museums & galleries – providing you with the ideal base for a comfortable and relaxing getaway.
The original building was constructed in the 1850s and was used as a family home by a surgeon at Addenbrookes hospital until it was purchased by the Cambridgeshire Country Council who offered a range of classes in the building. After much renovation and refurbishments, the building was converted into a hotel in 2002 and named Hotel Felix after Saint Felix of Burgundy who was Apostle to the East of Angles and also the founder of University of Cambridge.
The hotel has 52 bedrooms comprising of Classic, King and Premier rooms, spacious Junior Suites and the luxurious Penthouse. The Penthouse Suite and King Rooms are situated in the Victorian mansion while all the other rooms are located in the more contemporary East and West wings.
We stayed in one of the King rooms. The room was a good size and decorated in a contemporary fashion with a clean design. It was equipped with all the amenities one would expect in a hotel room. Let me begin with the most important thing: sleeping. The king-size bed with Hypnos mattress, Egyptian cotton sheets, duck down pillows and duvets ensured we had a very comfortable sleep.
Other in-room amenities included a mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities (fresh milk was provided), smart TV with Freeview channels, personal safe and hair dryer, iron and ironing board and a trouser press. Complimentary Wi-Fi was provided.
Moving on, the bathroom was very clean and had underfloor heating. Fluffy towels, bathrobes and White Company toiletries were provided. Nothing to fault here.
The hotel's communal areas were well maintained and one can see a lot of artwork around the hotel. From the sculpture of the dog at the hotel's entrance to the 'Male Torso', a heavy mesh sculpture in the Graffiti restaurant, to 'Beach, Sea, Rain', a beautiful square landscape in the lobby, the hotel walls proudly display art from a number of artists.
The beautiful, leafy gardens of the hotel exhibited vibrant colours of Autumn during our visit. The colour palette was a mix of flame reds, crimsons, salmon pinks, sunshine yellows and shades of green as well. We enjoyed the idyllic setting of the gardens.
Consistent with the overall friendly feel of the hotel, the atmosphere in the restaurant - Graffiti - was also one of relaxed and informal nature. We were booked in for dinner at around 7pm and the restaurant was already quite busy by then. Service wasn't the swiftest but as we did not have any other plans for the evening; we were fine with the pace. The menu had some interesting vegetarian options and for starters, I tried Quinoa, Roast Beetroot, Soya Bean and Tofu Spring Roll with Walnut dressing. It was a lovely presentation of flavours. My husband chose Goat's Cheese Mousse with Watercress Micro Sponge and Sesame Tuile. Main courses were fabulous too and we noticed that the emphasis was on flavour. I picked the South American style Quorn Empanada with Straw Potatoes while the husband enjoyed a seasonal Vegetable Paella with Baby Artichoke, Cherry Tomato and Onion Salad - a simple dish but done very well. The desserts were wonderful too.
There is so much to do in Cambridge. From enjoying a pint in one of the city's many fine pubs to taking a punting tour or simply taking a stroll around the city marvelling at the beautiful and quirky buildings; Cambridge is a fascinating city to spend time in. Many of Cambridge's colleges are free to visit and you can wander around the grounds or you could hire a bike and go around the city. For those who enjoy a spot of shopping, Cambridge has the Grand Arcade - a modern shopping mall and also a historic market which is open daily but turns into an arts and craft market on Sundays. The city also has a number of parks and hosts numerous festivals round the year. So, even though the city is quite small, there is loads to see and do in Cambridge.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Hotel Felix. The check-in and check-out, both were pleasant and convenient. The room was well appointed, the food was good and every member of staff we came across during our stay was warm and friendly. The location of the hotel is its USP, I feel - away from the city centre but within easy reach. Hotel Felix would make an equally excellent base for a romantic break as for an active, sightseeing holiday.
