Visiting The Beautiful Cotswolds Village Of Castle Combe
Cotswolds is one of my favourite places in England. Its honey-coloured stone buildings, lovely little tea rooms and cheerful pubs all exude a quintessential English charm. Every time I visit a Cotswolds village, I fall in love a little more with the area. And now after having visited many villages, I can safely say that Cotswolds is studded with the most beautiful villages in England.
Castle Combe lying northwest of Chippenham is the latest picturesque Cotswolds village we visited. It has been the backdrop for movies such as Warhorse, The Wolfman and Stardust and more recently the TV series Downton Abbey. As you walk round the village it becomes instantly obvious as to why movie makers choose to film their movies here. All the village houses are in typical Cotswolds style, with some of them being hundreds of years old. Not only are they beautiful but they remain architecturally unchanged from their original build. That is why as you walk down the small street leading from the Market Cross to the By Brook, you feel as if you have been transported back in time.
There is an interesting story about the Market Cross which is situated at the convergence of the three main streets in the village. The cross was raised when the village was regarded sufficiently prosperous to be permitted to have a weekly market where sheep and fleece were bought and sold.
Today the Market Cross is the starting point of exploration for most visitors to the village.
In addition to the Market Cross, other points of interest in the village are Church of St Andrew which dates back to medieval times, Castle Combe Manor House (a 14th century Manor house, now a luxury hotel) and a racetrack (Castle Combe Circuit).
There are few cosy tea rooms in the village and you can also buy homemade cakes and sweets from outside the locals’ houses.
Castle Combe is less than 15 minutes drive from Chippenham and just under half an hours drive from Bath. There is a free car park at the top of the village (Dunns Ln, SN14 7HH). Public toilet facilities can be found at the bottom of the village, just after the bridge.
