Visiting the Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire
Soaring over the surrounding landscape, the Ely Cathedral located in Cambridgeshire is a magnificent cathedral. I have visited several cathedrals in the UK and each one is unique in terms of architecture. While all cathedrals are different, they are also similar in the sense that each one fills you with awe. Whether you are visiting to offer prayers or just to savour the silence, cathedrals are a beautiful place to visit. The Ely Cathedral has a long and interesting history beginning in 672 with Æthelthryth, an East Anglian princess who later went on to be known as St Etheldreda. She founded the monastery at Ely in 673, which was destroyed in the Danish invasion of 870. It was then re-worked, rebuilt and finally became the Ely Cathedral. The cathedral underwent a great restoration lasting 10 years in 1990s and today it welcomes visitors from all over the world whether the purpose of your visit is religious, architectural or simply to experience the awe inspiring place.
We visited the cathedral when we happened to be in Cambridge. As we drove into Ely(it is around 20 minutes from Cambridge), we could see the cathedral from miles away as it towers over the surrounding buildings. It's stunning. The cathedral covers a total area of nearly 46,000 sq.ft and has an impressive external façade. The interior of the cathedral is also beautiful with several chapels, stunning doorways and furnishings, remarkable crypts and magnificent ceilings. The view from the entrance towards the high altar is spectacular. The stained glass windows were marvellous too.
There is an admission charge to enter the cathedral and the charge includes a ground floor guided tour when these are scheduled. You can check this page for more information on the opening times, charges and facilities at the cathedral. Ely Cathedral is an impressive cathedral. If you happen to be in the vicinity, then do visit the cathedral.
