La Frégate Hotel - Hotel Review
Set at the end of a narrow lane amidst beautiful terraced gardens in St Peter Port is the La Frégate Hotel. The 4-star hotel looks non-pretentious and modest from the outside, but when you enter the 18th century house you are greeted with beautiful modern interiors.
The hotel's hilltop location means that almost all rooms have a beautiful view. You can choose from standard rooms, bay rooms, deluxe rooms or the suite spread over the original house and the new wing. From our bay room we had a lovely view of the St Peter Port harbour and Cornet Castle. Most rooms come with an attached balcony where you can enjoy the sun and the fresh air while looking at the harbour.
Irrespective of the kind of room you choose, all rooms are well furnished and offer comfort with elegance. The room we stayed in during our trip to Guernsey was furnished with a LCD TV, an iPod docking station, DVD player and direct dial telephone. The room also included tea and coffee making facilities, a trouser press, hairdryer, an iron and an ironing board. Free Wi-Fi was available in all areas of the hotel.
The bathroom was spacious, clean and well stocked with toiletries. The towels were clean and soft and the bathrobes of good quality.
The hotel is quite close to the waterfront and the town centre. There is a steep path which leads to the waterfront. There is another path as well with a lot of steps via the hotel's garden. Both these paths are however not suitable for those who are less mobile. You could take the narrow road which is not so steep, but may take longer to get to the waterfront.
While we did not sample any food at the La Frégate, because we were mostly out exploring the island, the hotel does have a restaurant. There is also a sea view terrace location where you can enjoy a meal while looking out at the harbour.
The staff are friendly, professional and efficient. What I liked the most about the hotel apart from the lovely views was the fact that it was so quiet and peaceful. In fact the only noise I heard was the hoot of a Condor ferry arriving into the port.
If there was anything they could improve on, it would be providing additional space to hang clothes.
If you are travelling with a companion and plan to stay for a longer duration then the space provided is not sufficient enough for 2 people to hang their clothes. If you are staying at La Frégate for the first time, make sure you have the address and proper directions as the hotel may be a bit difficult to find. Apart from these 2 minor gripes, the hotel is wonderful to stay at.
Overall, with good views, great location, friendly yet discreet staff and comfortable well-furnished rooms we enjoyed our stay at La Frégate and would surely stay with them again.
You can check with the hotel as they regularly run special luxury weekend breaks.
