Fairlop Waters Country Park in Redbridge, Essex
Fairlop Waters is the largest Country park in Redbridge. It has a range of facilities and caters to visitors of all ages.
The main offerings are 19 hole golf course, 18 hole golf course, bar and restaurant, a 120 seater lakeside suite for functions and events, a Boulder Park and a 38 acres sailing and angling lake.
The park has an interesting history. There is some evidence that the area may have been home to an Iron Age settlement. However, the records begin with its usage as a Royal Hunting ground. It is said that in the 1720s the land at Fairlop belonged to one Daniel Day who used to hold the Fairlop Fair every year under the huge Fairlop Oak. People used to picnic inside and around the Oaks trunk. The tree caught fire and was burnt down in 1805. In 1851 the around 3000 acres of the forest were cleared and Fairlop Plain was planned on 1000 acres. In the 1940s the ground was used as an Aerodrome. And finally in 1955 Ilford Council purchased the land and began the development of the area as a county park with a sailing lake and a golf course.
Over the years Fairlop Waters has developed into the beautiful country park that it is today.
Fairlop Waters has a wide diversity of habitats like grassland, woodland, ponds, and lakes. It is thus a haven for a large range of wildlife through all seasons. A nesting habitat has been created on the main island for birds. Birds that you can spot all year round include - Canada Goose, Green Woodpecker, Skylark, Grey Heron, Little Grebe, Little Owl, and Meadow Pipit among others. Some winter visitors are Goldcrests, Green Sandpiper, Pochard, Tufted Duck and Shelduck.
