Medehamstede hotel in Shanklin - Hotel Review
During our visit to Shanklin in Isle of Wight, we were put up at the Medehamstede hotel. It is a family owned hotel situated quite close to the cliffs. We went on a coach tour and as such the accommodation was booked by the tour operator.
We went during the Christmas week and so the place was decorated in the festival spirit - christmas tree, inflatable Santas and snowmen and other decorations adorned all the common areas of the hotel.
Our room was of a decent size and we could see the cliff and water from the windows. Our room was the first one near the landing on the second floor. There were a couple more rooms after ours. Everytime someone used the door to our section, we could hear the creaking and noise inside our room. The bathroom door was not fixed properly in our room and we had to take care that it did not come off.
What I liked about the hotel:
- close proximity to the cliff, esplanade and the beach
- free car and coach parking
- can walk down to the city center
- some really good and friendly restaurant staff
What I did not like about the hotel:
- we went there in the last week of December and it was quite cold and windy. But to our dismay the heating in the rooms was not turned on always. We were back from a day trip on the first day to a cold room. On enquiring we were told that many guests were complaining about the warmth and so the heating was turned off. They turn on the heating only for a few hours in the evening/night. A big minus point for me. It might be okay in summers but in winters I expect that the room is always heated.
- No phones in the rooms. If you need to talk to the hotel staff or need anything you have to go down to the reception. Not good for those staying in first or second floors especially for the aged. There were many elderly couples staying at the hotel during the time we stayed and we were wondering how difficult it must be for them to climb down the stairs to go to the reception.
- Breakfast menu was okay but we were a bit disappointed with the evening main course.
Would I stay again at the Medehamstede Hotel? - Overall though the stay was okay, I would in all probability not go back there.
