Gretna Green in Scotland
Gretna Green has always been synonymous with weddings (mostly the runaway kind), love and romance. On our way to Scotland from London, our coach driver enthralled us with stories about Gretna Green. They have been involved with weddings from 1886 onwards and are still one of the top destinations for weddings in UK.
Gretna Green is situated near the mouth of River Esk and was considered the first village in Scotland if you travelled from London to Edinburgh on the old coach route. It has retained its charm as a popular wedding destination over the years. This can be gauged from the fact that more than 5000 weddings are hosted here every year.
Marriage Act: In 1753 the Marriage Act was passed in England which stated that unless both the groom and the bride were 21 years or older, they needed parental consent for marriage. Scotland was not a part of this and so even if you were 12 or 13 or 14 years old, you could get married. So many love-struck couples fled from England to Scotland to get married. Gretna Green was the first Scottish village they encountered and they got married at the Old Blacksmiths Hall there...phew...so romantic, isn't it?
